How to Place a Free Classified Ad Online

The Internet has changed the way we buy and sell items. Web sites such as Craigslist and eBay, among others, have become enormously popular in recent years. Craigslist, for example, has over ten million unique visitors every month and ten million new classified advertisements placed every month, and it’s ranked in the top ten most popular Web sites in the United States. There are many other sites on the Web that offer free classified ad listings. Placing an ad is very easy, and in most cases your ad will be online within thirty minutes of submission.

1. Selection of a classified ad site might depend on what you’re trying to sell. See the Resources section of this article for a list of free classified ad sites.

2. Navigate to the site you’ve chosen. In most cases, a link to placing your free classified ad will be on the home page.

3. Click the link to start placing your ad. Check the word or character limit to see how much you can write.

4. Write your ad in Microsoft Word or another word processing program if you have it. This gives you an easy way of checking that you’re under the word limit if the Web site does not have a character counting feature.

5. Cut and paste your ad into the Web site form. Add the other details you need to complete your ad.

6. Check your ad carefully—make sure all your contact details are correct before you publish your ad.

7. Note down any details the site provides you about ad placement, such as how long the ad will remain on the site.

Tips & Warnings

• Put only the most important details in your ad. It’s free, but in most cases you have a word limit, so only write what you need to. For example if you’re selling a car, if you add make, model, year, condition and your contact details, plus a few words about any special features, you’re probably at your word limit.
• Note that most sites will require you to register before you can place an ad.
• Most online classified ad sites do not mediate between buyers and sellers if you have a dispute. You are responsible for all aspects of your side of the transaction.
• Be very wary of scams when you’re buying and selling online. A common scam involves buyers mailing fraudulent cashier’s checks or money orders in payment for items. If you fall victim to such a scam, your bank will hold you personally responsible for replacing the money. To avoid being scammed, deal locally with people you can meet face-to-face. By sticking to this rule, you’ll avoid virtually all scam attempts.
