Fax machines come in all shapes and sizes, but replacing the toner is a very similar process in most models. Follow these simple steps to replace a toner cartridge in a fax machine.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Fax machine
  • Toner cartridge

Step1
Check your fax machine to make sure you purchase the correct replacement toner. You can find this information from your owner’s manual or on the cartridge that is already in the fax machine.
Step2
Locate the fax machine’s front access door and open it. Be sure not to force the door open.
Step3
Find the toner cartridge and remove it gently by pulling the toner cartridge toward you. Set it aside on a piece of newspaper or a drop-cloth. Toner powder may leak out.
Step4
Remove the new cartridge from its packaging. Set the packaging aside; you will use it shortly to dispose of the old cartridge.
Step5
Shake the cartridge three times with a side-to-side motion. This distributes the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
Step6
Remove the protective seals on the cartridge and insert it into the fax machine. Close the fax machine’s front access door.
Step7
Place the old toner into the plastic bag and box from the new toner. Recycle or discard the old toner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Generic or refurbished toner cartridges will save you money.
  • Be careful about moving the used cartridge around. Toner powder could continue to leak out.
  • Toner cartridges may look the same, but always make sure to buy the correct or compatible one for your fax machine.
