How to Update iPod Software on a PC

Apple continually issues free software updates for the iPod. Having the latest software is the best way to keep your iPod running smoothly. To download the updates, just follow these instructions.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • iPod
  1. Step 1

    Connect your iPod to your computer with a USB connector.

  2. Step 2

    Upgrade your iTunes program. Visit the Apple iTunes Web site and review the system requirements for iTunes 7. If your system meets the requirements, install iTunes 7, which includes the most recent iPod software updates.

  3. Step 3

    Open iTunes 7 and click on the iPod icon under Devices.

  4. Step 4

    Select the Summary page for your iPod. The "Update" button will appear if there are updates available for your iPod. Click it to download the upgrades and restart your iPod.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before you disconnect your iPod, click the "Eject" button or select Eject from the Controls menu.
  • Your PC may not be able to run the newest version of iTunes 7. Visit the Apple iTunes Web site to access updates for your computer’s system and your version of iTunes. Click the Support tab at the top of the Web site and select the iPod 101 link. Click iPod Anatomy and then Lesson 4: Installing and Updating Software. Here, you'll learn about iPod updates and find a link to previous downloads for PC users.
