How to Buy a New Car Online at AutoTrader

Web sites such as AutoTrader provide a marketplace for new cars that you can visit without leaving home. Follow these steps and you can compare the features of cars and obtain price quotes while sitting at your computer.

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with Internet access

    Search for New Cars

  1. Step 1

    Navigate to the AutoTrader Web site. Select the “Find Your Car” tab from the menu bar on the homepage.

  2. Step 2

    Select “New Cars,” and then type your zip code into the appropriate box and specify an area to search. Select a make and model for up to three cars, choose the year and a price range.

  3. Step 3

    Click the “View more search criteria” link to search for advanced features such as colors, accessories and engine specifications.

  4. Step 4

    Click the “Search” button when you’ve finished making your selections.

  5. Step 5

    Search results include pricing information, location and contact information for the dealer selling the car.

  6. Compare New Cars

  7. Step 1

    Complete the above steps to summon search results for any cars in which you're interested.

  8. Step 2

    Check the boxes next to the listings to compare as many as three cars. Click the “Compare” button after you make your selections.

  9. Step 3

    Comparisons include information on price, body style, engine and transmission, contact information for the seller and the vehicle identification number for each car model. Auto Trader arranges the Information in columns for easy comparison.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you register with AutoTrader you can save your search criteria and assign cars you're to a “wish list” for easy access later. Membership is free, and the only information you must supply is an email address and a password for your account.
  • You can price new cars by selecting the “New Cars” tab from the menu bar on the homepage. Select the make, model and year of the car, add your zip code and then follow the instructions on the next page to receive quotes (you’re under no obligation to buy).
  • Note that AutoTrader does not actually sell cars—it provides a place for buyers and sellers to meet but does not participate in transactions.
  • Listed prices do not include sales tax or additional charges such as registration, finance, license and title fees.
