Flatbed fax machines generally can copy and/or scan images into a computer. A flatbed fax machine has both a flat glass scanning table and a document feed port, allowing for multiple types of scanning. When buying a flatbed fax machine, determine what you need—or don’t need—the machine to do.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step1
Make sure your computer has programs compatible with the flatbed fax machine. Many require at least a Windows 98 operating system.
Step2
Determine how much faxing and copying you need the machine to do. That way, you will know how much paper capacity, feed capacity and fax memory you need the machine to have. Many machines can handle up to 100 pages of memory.
Step3
Get a flatbed fax machine with either inkjet or laser printing technology. Either is fine for good images resolution.
Step4
Make sure the machine has all the features you need. Standard features should include automatic redial, speed dial, auto phone/fax switchover and multiple location faxing abilities.
Step5
Make sure the machine has a warranty on parts and labor. More abilities can mean more difficulty figuring out problems, so make sure you have a help line handy to call.
Step6
Go to an electronics product review Web site and read customer reviews of the fax machines you are considering buying.
Step7
Buy your flatbed fax machine online or from a local retailer. Follow the directions when installing it. Call the store immediately if something goes wrong. Also, save the packaging in case you need to return it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan to copy and fax, you will need a dedicated phone line. If you plan to get a fax machine that can scan images into your computer, make sure your computer is nearby.
  • A combination machine, such as a flatbed fax, scanner and copier, can use up ink cartridges pretty fast. Have a few on hand if you plan to use the features several times a day. Also, figure the cost of cartridges into your budget.
  • Compare product detail on flatbed fax machines. Paying more doesn’t mean it’s a better machine. Sometimes the same features aren’t available on certain models. Shop smart!
