Do you need a new—or a first—fax machine? Unless you want particularly high speed and volume capability in your fax machine, an inkjet fax machine might be the best choice.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Decide how much money you are willing to spend. You'll want to buy a fax machine that has all the features you need and will last a while—don't sacrifice quality for savings.

  2. Step 2

Think about what features are most important to you and what you are going to use the machine for. There will be a range of options in printing functions, speed, memory and extra features.

  3. Step 3

Research the fax modem speed of different models. The highest speed for a fax modem in an inkjet fax machine is 33.6 Kbps.

  4. Step 4

Decide if you want the capability to copy, print and fax in color. If so, you will need to spend extra to get a color inkjet fax machine.

  5. Step 5

Shop around. Compare prices at several local stores and online stores. Look at product-review Web sites to see what other consumers have to say about the different styles and brands.

  6. Step 6

Buy your new inkjet fax machine at the store with the best selection and the best price.

Tips & Warnings
  • Available extra features include caller ID, speed dialing, auto redial, answering machine, speakerphone, fax forwarding and a telephone. But don't spend more for options you won't use.
  • Save all boxes and receipts in case you need to return the item. Most stores don’t accept returns without a box or receipt.
  • If your fax machine comes with a rebate, don't forget to send in for it. You'll probably need the receipt and the bar code from the packaging—don't throw these away.
