An SUV offers the height of security and convenience to drivers across the spectrum. One way to augment both of those features inexpensively is to install a remote keyless entry system. This will give you the convenience and security of keyless entry to your SUV without an installation fee.

Things You'll Need:

  • SUV
  • Necessary tools
  1. Step 1

Find out which systems are compatible with your SUV. You can contact your favorite mechanic or the dealership for this information. Some can even order the factory keyless entry kit for you.

  2. Step 2

Figure out what you want from your keyless entry system, and what you can install. Some systems include a remote-start feature, for example, but should not be installed if you are not comfortable working around the ignition.

  3. Step 3

Develop a budget. Now that you know what your SUV is compatible with and what you are able to install, the next step is to decide what you can afford.

  4. Step 4

Ask around for advice. Contact your dealer and your local mechanic if you are friendly with them. Every keyless entry system and every SUV are different, making for a lot of confusing combinations.

  5. Step 5

Go on the Internet. Online motoring forums contain a wealth of ratings and reviews on keyless entry systems for SUVs: which ones work, which do not and which are good for which SUVs.

  6. Step 6

Buy a kit. There are many kits available that offer step-by-step instructions for installing a particular system in a particular SUV with only basic tools.

  7. Step 7

Build your own. Should you be a moderately talented engineer, you will be able to download and understand any of several free plans available on the Internet for constructing your own keyless entry system.

Tips & Warnings
  • When using any kind of installation kit, make sure you read the entire installation manual before beginning.
  • Consult your dealer and the maker of your SUV to confirm that the keyless entry kit you have selected does not void your SUV warranty.
  • Do not attempt to install the keyless entry system unless you are confident in your abilities to do so, or have the competent guidance of somebody who is.
