Motorcycles are convenient for the very same reason they are easy to steal: their size. Motorcycle alarms and other anti-theft devices are up against criminals, who definitely have the advantage. Still, there is no reason to make it any easier for a thief to steal your ride. Follow these steps to shop for an alarm system for a motorcycle.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Motorcycle
  1. Step 1

Determine a budget. Motorcycle alarms are fairly inexpensive compared to auto alarms, but can still run a couple hundred dollars (compared to a homemade one for around 10 bucks).

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you want to install a motorcycle alarm yourself or have it professionally installed. Motorcycle alarms are not as complicated as vehicle alarms, allowing a rider with little engineering knowledge to install or even build one.

  3. Step 3

Decide which features you want. Motorcycle alarms can emit audible warnings and transmit messages to a pager or cell phone, among other features.

  4. Step 4

Shop around. Consult online forums and motorcycling magazines to see which alarms people are happy with. Consider reliability, frequency of false alarms and affordability when browsing the literature.

  5. Step 5

Ask friends and at local shops. This is sometimes the most reliable information, and you can instantly ask follow-up questions or for a clarification.

  6. Step 6

Consider buying locally if you do not build your own alarm system. That way, if it malfunctions, it will be easy to return or fix.

  7. Step 7

Double up your security. Always use the bike's built-in safety features. And, it is a good idea to add another layer of security, such as a hidden kill switch or frame chain.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store your motorcycle in your garage or under a cover to keep it out of sight and make it a less tempting target for motorcycle theft.
  • Test your alarm system, whether you had it professionally installed or you installed it yourself.
  • When having your alarm professionally installed, make sure the technician is licensed to do the work.
