To use your MP3 player in your car or on your home stereo system, you can buy expensive stereo connection components. Alternatively, you can use a cost effective FM transmitter. The FM transmitter simply connects to your MP3 player and then broadcasts a short FM transmission of the songs playing on your MP3 player. Here's how to do it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a digital FM transmitter for your MP3 player at your local electronic boutique or online from one of the thousands of electronics dealers.

  2. Step 2

    Plug in your MP3 player.

  3. Step 3

Set the transmission frequency on the FM transmitter to a nonused station.

  4. Step 4

Tune your FM receiver to the FM transmission station.

  5. Step 5

    Listen to your MP3 station.

Tips & Warnings
  • On car trips most FM transmitters are good for approximately 50 feet. A car behind you can tune to your station and listen to your transmission. This is helpful when groups of people are traveling together in carpooling fashion. Not all transmitters are compatible with all MP3 players. Verify that your MP3 player is listed as a compatible device before buying the transmitter.
