Wireless game play is one of the best features on Nintendo DS but it doesn't always work correctly. Luckily, the problem is usually remedied by a little bit of troubleshooting. Also, it's a good idea to troubleshoot before you call technical support. Follow these steps to troubleshoot wireless game play on a Nintendo DS:

    Playing Multiplayer Wireless

  1. Step 1

There are two types of wireless gameplay. Here's how to fix your problems when playing multi-card or single-card multiplayer with Nintendo DS systems in the general vicinity.

  2. Step 2

Make sure all systems have the game for multi-card. Multi-card games require that each person has the game card inserted into their system.

  3. Step 3

Move closer. Nintendo recommends that you start from 30 feet away and move closer or further away accordingly. You want the strongest signal possible to avoid problems.

  4. Step 4

Avoid other wireless devices. Routers, cordless phones, microwaves, computers and other devices can interfere with the Nintendo DS. Turn off other devices or move to another area.

  5. Step 5

Point the systems directly at each other. This increases signal strength.

  6. Step 6

Remove physical obstructions. The wireless play works best with a clear, unobstructed line of sight. Things like people, doors and walls can interfere with the signal.

  7. Step 7

Make sure the game is supported. Not all games support wireless multiplayer. Gameboy Advance Games cannot use the wireless feature.

  8. Playing over the Internet

  9. Step 1

You can play with people around the world if you are in a hotspot.

  10. Step 2

Make sure you are at a partner hotspot. Nintendo works best with WayPort and FatPort hotspots.

  11. Step 3

Try moving to a different location. Signal strength is stronger in certain places--just like with your cell phone.

  12. Step 4

Remove firewalls. Firewalls are notoriously troublesome for Internet play. You may have to disable your firewall temporarily to connect to the Internet with your Nintendo DS.

  13. Step 5

Set up your router. Make sure “disable broadcast” is not selected. Disable security or switch to WEP. Turn off MAC filtering. Set your router to “mixed” or “auto” for Network speed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Signal strength at public hotspots is usually best in the middle of the store or near the register.

  • To use the Nintendo DS USB connector you must have an existing Internet connection.
  • Disabling firewalls poses security problems. See www.nintendowifi.com for in-depth manual set-up options.
