Before you install a remote starter in a truck, thoroughly read the installation manual. Late-model trucks have a computer that controls and monitors vehicle functions. This computer may be damaged if the remote starter is not installed properly. Follow these steps to install a remote starter in a truck.

  • Soldering iron
  • Wire strippers
  • Digital multi-meter
  • Truck
  • Screwdrivers
  • Solder
  • Heat gun
  • Remote starter kit
  • Wrenches

  • Shrink wrap
  1. Step 1

    Check all lights and power systems to ensure they are working properly.

  2. Step 2

    Unpack the remote starter system and read all instructions. Make sure you understand the instructions before you begin.

  3. Step 3

    Assemble items required for the installation. General items needed are wrenches and screwdrivers. Items needed to make electrical connections are electrical tape, soldering iron, solder, digital multi-meter, wire cutters, wire strippers, shrink wrap and a heat gun.

  4. Step 4

    Locate the wires under the steering wheel to connect the remote starter. Common connections are starter, power, ignition, and accessories such as radio, power locks, alarm system and temperature controls.

  5. Step 5

    Disconnect the battery cables. Use caution when doing this.

  6. Step 6

    Determine the correct vehicle wires to connect to the remote starter, and make the connections. The number of wires varies per vehicle make and model. If a single connection consists of more than two wires, use relays.

  7. Step 7

    Hook up the battery cables and test the remote starter.
