Late-model SUVs have computer systems to control and monitor vehicle functions. Care must be taken when installing a remote starter in an SUV, because improper installation could lead to expensive damage to the vehicle’s computer.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wire cutters
  • Screwdriver set
  • Wrench set
  • Tools
  • Digital multi-meter
  • Remote starter
  • Solder
  • Wire strippers
  • SUV
  • Soldering iron
  • Shrink wrap
  • Electrical tape
  • Heat gun
  1. Step 1

Inspect the vehicle before installation. Make notes of anything that is not functioning properly, especially electrical components such as lights, power windows, radio and temperature controls.

  2. Step 2

Read the remote starter installation manual thoroughly. Make sure you understand the installation manual before you begin.

  3. Step 3

Collect the tools needed for the installation: a wrench set, a screwdriver set, a digital multi-meter, wire cutters, wire strippers, electrical tape, soldering iron, solder, shrink wrap and a heat gun.

  4. Step 4

Identify each wire to be connected. The vehicle wires to be connected to the remote starter are located under the steering wheel.

  5. Step 5

Disconnect the vehicle battery to prevent damage, and to prevent any injury to you while taking part in this project.

  6. Step 6

Connect each vehicle wire to the corresponding remote starter wire. A relay may be necessary if the vehicle has more than one wire controlling an electrical system.

  7. Step 7

Connect the battery and test the remote starter and all vehicle systems. Troubleshoot when necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Research the vehicle’s anti-theft system before starting.
  • Soldered connections are more solid and effective.
  • A vehicle’s computers are expensive to replace--be sure to check all connections before reconnecting the battery!
  • Sharp metal surfaces under the steering wheel could damage wires.
