You can use Skype if you don’t have a microphone or headset, but you can not do any voice chat. Instead, you can use Skype as an "instant messenger" (typing chat) to chat with friends and family from around the world. (You may still be able to hear them using Skype if you have computer speakers or regular earphones.) Instant messaging with Skype is free to use.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with an Internet connection or Personal Digital Assitant (PDA) with Internet capabilities
  • Skype account

Step1
Log in to Skype using your user name and password.
Step2
Right-click on the contact you wish to speak with.
Step3
Click “Start Chat.” This will open an "Instant Messaging" window with the contact that you selected.
Step4
You can now chat with your contact using your keyboard. Type as usual and have fun chatting.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can try plugging in regular ear phones to your computer. This probably will not work though.
  • It is advisable that you purchase a headset or microphone and speakers for your computer to use Skype voice chat. Skype was created as a new and effective communication tool that doesn’t require a lot of typing. In fact, it is made to be used just as if you were talking on the telephone.
  • You can use Skype to call land lines and cell phones as well as other people’s computers. You can call the computers of other Skype users for free. You can call landlines and cell phones for a minimal fee. Check the Skype Web site for costs associated with using the Skype program to call telephones.
  • Most computers purchased in the last few years come equipped with a built-in microphone and speakers. Double-check your computer to make sure you don’t have these already. You can find out if your computer has built-in speakers and a microphone by click on your control panel and then clicking on "Sound Devices."
