You'll get the best performance out of the Skype program if you use a headset. However, if you would like to use Skype without a headset, you can do so using a microphone and speakers. The concept is the same as using a headset, just keep in mind that others may be able to hear your whole conversation if you use speakers without earphones. Most computers today come equipped with a built-in microphone and speakers. If your computer does not have a microphone and speakers built in, then you will need to purchase them from an electronics store. You can also use a USB phone, which connects to the USB port on your computer, in place of a headset or speakers and a microphone.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with an Internet connection or Personal Digital Assitant (PDA) with Internet capabilities
  • Microphone and speakers
  • Skype account
  1. Step 1

Attach a microphone and speakers to your computer, if you don’t have them already built in. Ensure that you are hooking them up to the correct slots at the back of your computer.

  2. Step 2

Log in to Skype using your user name and password.

  3. Step 3

Click on “Skype,” then “Preference,” then “Audio.” Select the microphone and speakers that you have just connected to your computer or are built into your computer. They should appear in a list on that page. You are now ready to use Skype with your speakers and microphone.

  4. Step 4

Use the Skype troubleshooter if you have any problems.

  5. Step 5

Use Echo123 on the Skype Web site if your sound isn't working properly. This program tests to see if your headset is working.

Tips & Warnings
  • Having a headset is not a requirement to use Skype. The built-in microphone and speakers on your computer will do just fine, as will a separately purchased microphone and set of speakers. You may want to use regular earphones or ear buds to keep the incoming conversation private from the rest of your home. Earphones can plug into the slot on the back of your computer or on the speakers.
  • If you have technical problems with your sound, ensure that you have selected the right speakers and microphone in your Skype program.
  • If you can’t hear anyone or can’t be heard, try using the Echo 123 program on Skype. This will test the sound produced by your speakers and microphone and help you troubleshoot any problems you may be having.
  • You can also use a USB phone for chatting on Skype. Hook it up the same way that you would hook up a headset or microphone and speakers.
