Skype is a wonderful program that allows you to talk with other Skype users via the computer. All you need to use Skype is a home computer, running Windows with a sound card, that came with speakers and a microphone built in or a headset. You will get the best results from using the Skype program if you have a headset. Most computers now have built-in microphones and speakers which are perfectly fine to use for the voice chat program; however, Skype highly recommends purchasing a headset instead. Headsets are relatively inexpensive and can be found at most electronic stores, some department stores and online at the Skype store.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer with an Internet connection or Personal Digital Assitant (PDA) with Internet capabilities
  • Headset
  • Skype program and a Skype account
  1. Step 1

Purchase a headset that has a microphone that has either two separate connectors or a USB connector.

  2. Step 2

Connect the headset to your computer. Ensure that you are connecting the right connector to the right plug. They are usually color coded green and red.

  3. Step 3

Turn on Skype and log in with your user name and password.

  4. Step 4

Click on “Skype,” then “Preference,” then “Audio.” Select the headset that you have just connected to your computer. You are now ready to use Skype with your headset.

  5. Step 5

Use the Skype troubleshooter if you have any problems.

  6. Step 6

Use Echo123 on the Skype Web site if your sound is not working properly. This program tests to see if your headset is working.

Tips & Warnings
  • Skype has Echo 123 on their Web site to help you with problems with your headset. You can record and playback sound on Echo 123 to help you diagnose your technical problems with your headset and/or sound.
  • When there is no sound activity for 10 seconds on a call, Skype will display a message that says “Skype cannot hear you talking. Click here to select correct microphone and speakers.” Click on the link and the sound settings widget will open.
  • The sound settings widget is a part of Skype that will allow you to change the volume of your speakers while you are on a call. You can also change your preferred microphone/speakers/headset devices while you are on a Skype call.
  • If you have technical difficulties with your headset and/or sound, use the Echo 123 program and check your preferences. If everything seems to be in order, use the Skype troubleshooting guide available on their Web site. You should also check to see that your headset connector cables are hooked into the proper slots on the back of your computer. They are usually color coded red and green and the slots on your computer should be similar colors.
