How to Upload a Photo to Skype

Personalizing your Skype account is as simple and easy as adding a picture. The picture can be a photograph of yourself, clipart or some other picture you have created. The picture that you choose to upload to your profile will be shown to your friends when you chat with them on Skype. Skype offers a wide variety of pictures to choose from, or you can upload your own photo. You can choose almost any photo or picture to use, however, no pornography, nudity or suggestive/crude gestures are allowed.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with an Internet connection or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) with Internet capabilities
  • Skype program and a Skype account

Step1
Open your Skype and log on with your user name and password.
Step2
Click on “File” in the menu and select “Edit my Profile” to open your personal Skype profile. At the bottom left of your profile screen, you will see the display picture box.

Click “Change” to open a new screen called “My Pictures.” Here, you can choose one of Skype’s pre-loaded photos or choose your own. Ensure that your picture is in one of the three allowable file formats—JPG, PNG or BMP.

Click "Browse" to choose your own photo. Find the picture on your computer and click “OK.”

Click “OK” again. Your picture has now been loaded.

Click on “Options” then “Set Picture,” if you want to change or add a picture to your public chat after it has been created. Select the image from your computer or from Skype’s picture database and click “OK.”

Tips & Warnings

  • You must use one of the following formats for your photo or picture: JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png) or bitmap (.bmp). If your picture is not in one of these three allowable file formats, it will not display. You can not used animated images.
  • Skype’s default picture size is 96 by 96 pixels. If you picture is fuzzy or blurry, it may be caused by Skype resizing to the default picture size. To correct this problem, resize your photograph or picture into a square. To ensure perfect quality, resize the photo to 96 by 96 pixels yourself.
  • You can resize or crop your photo to a square so that the picture will not distort or get fuzzy or blurry when you upload it using any paint or picture program on your computer.
  • If you cannot see your uploaded photo or picture on your Skype, ensure that it is in one of the allowable file formats. If it isn’t, then you must choose a new picture or change the file format using another computer program.
