How to Share a Group in Skype

Sharing a group in Skype allows you the flexibility to conference call everyone in a certain department at work, chat with family from around the world on Thanksgiving Day and email your friends those rediscovered prom pictures. You can update anyone in your shared group with your new address and phone number and they can do the same. Sharing a group in Skype is easy and adds lots of great features to your Skype experience.

  1. Setting Up a Shared Skype Group

      Find the contacts you'd like to include in your group. Do this by clicking the green circle button with the white plus sign, then searching for your friends and family members.

      Exchange contact information with your new contacts. Simply right click a name from your Contacts tab (the tab with the silhouette on it) and select "Request Contact Details." It is required that all members of your group have released their information to you.

      Open the Groups menu by clicking "View" from the horizontal menu along the top of your Skype window and selecting "Show Contact Groups." It should now be checked and a Groups menu should appear below the tabs on the Contacts tab.

      Create a new group by clicking the green circle encasing a white plus sign. Give the group a name.

      Add members to the group by clicking on the names from the Contacts section, holding down your left mouse button and dragging each to the chosen group. Release the left mouse button when the proper group is highlighted. This is called "drag and drop."

      Drag and drop additional contacts to your new group.

      Share your group by right-clicking on the group name and selecting "Share Group."

Tips & Warnings

  • Contacts can be members of multiple shared groups without re-adding them. Simply drag and drop their name into additional groups from your list of contacts.

  • Hide your groups by double clicking the Groups menu bar. Unhide your groups by double clicking the Groups menu bar again.

  • Right-click on a group to select from various feature options. These include conference calls, group chat, sharing files with the group and sending contact information to all group members.

  • You can also select "Remove Group," which will remove the group from all members' group lists. If you want to change them of the group on all members' lists, select "Rename Group."
