This first time you open iTunes, a Setup Assistant offers different options for managing your music files. By following the steps here, you can understand your options and configure iTunes file management to work the way that suits you best.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Open iTunes.
Step2
Open iTunes Preferences. Mac users: From the iTunes menu, choose "Preferences." Windows users: On the Edit menu, click "Preferences."
Step3
Click the "Advanced" tab, then click the "General" tab beneath it.
Step4
In the resulting window, the top text box shows you the path to your iTunes Music folder. The default location for Mac users is /Users/your_username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. The default location for Windows users is C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.
Step5
If you want iTunes to use a different location, click "Change," locate the folder you want to use and click "Choose."
Step6
You can set iTunes to automatically sort imported songs by album and artist, and to make sure all file names are based on a song's name and track number.
Step7
To have iTunes manage your music files, select the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" checkbox.
Step8
If you want to keep all your music in one location—the iTunes Music folder—select the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checkbox.
Step9
Click "OK" when you are finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keeping all of your music files in one location can help you keep better track of your music than having your files scattered everywhere.
  • If you have purchased music to download or import into iTunes, it is a good idea to keep a backup copy in a second folder separate from iTunes.
