Open iTunes Preferences. Mac users: From the iTunes menu, choose "Preferences." Windows users: On the Edit menu, click "Preferences."

Click the "Advanced" tab, then click the "General" tab beneath it.

In the resulting window, the top text box shows you the path to your iTunes Music folder. The default location for Mac users is /Users/your_username/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. The default location for Windows users is C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music.

If you want iTunes to use a different location, click "Change," locate the folder you want to use and click "Choose."

You can set iTunes to automatically sort imported songs by album and artist, and to make sure all file names are based on a song's name and track number.

To have iTunes manage your music files, select the "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" checkbox.

If you want to keep all your music in one location—the iTunes Music folder—select the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checkbox.

Click "OK" when you are finished.
