Things You'll Need:

  • SUV
  1. Step 1

Browse local electronic and automotive stores. Look at a few different models and check prices. Ask the salespeople any questions that you may have.

  2. Step 2

Determine how much you can afford to spend. You can find something very simple or high-end, depending on how much cash you want to drop.

  3. Step 3

Select a system with at least a 500-foot range.

  4. Step 4

Choose a system with a remote, keyless entry, a transmitter and alarm features. You will also need a panic alarm and car finder.

  5. Step 5

Shop for safety. Choose a system that will only engage when the SUV’s transmission is in park and when the hood is shut. Make sure the system you buy has a foot brake safety switch that will shut off when the brake is tapped.

  6. Step 6

Select a system with a temperature sensor that will shut off the engine if it gets too hot.

  7. Step 7

Choose a system with an anti-grind option to protect your SUV’s starter from damage if you accidentally engage the starter while turning on the ignition.

  8. Step 8

Make sure the system you choose includes a warranty. Get the best warranty you can afford in case you have any problems later.

  9. Step 9

Find a shop that has a good reputation and installers who are certified by the Mobile Electronics Certification Program. Talk with the installers and ask to see samples of their work.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have children who play with your remote starter, program the remote so that two buttons need to be pressed at the same time to engage the remote start to prevent your kids from accidentally starting your SUV.
  • Only use your remote starter when you really need to. Gas is expensive and SUVs use more gas than cars.
  • Remote starters should only be used with fuel-injected, automatic transmission vehicles.
