Configuring the wireless networking feature on your Dell Axim depends on how you're going to be accessing Wi-Fi on your handheld PC. There are two operating considerations that influence the configuration process: the network card and the service set identifier (SSID), if the network you're using broadcasts through one. Follow these steps to configure a Dell Axim for wireless networking.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • owner's manual
  • Dell Axim

    Network Card

  1. Step 1

Go to the “Start” screen and tap “Settings.” Next, tap on “Connections.” Now, select “Network Cards” and then choose “Internet” or “Work.”

  2. Step 2

Pick the network card you want to use to connect to the network. Now, set the IP address for the network card and tap OK.

  3. SSID Is Present

  4. Step 1

Turn on the wireless function by pushing the wireless button. An indicator light should come on to let you know that your wireless is ready to go.

  5. Step 2

Go to the “Start” screen and tap “Settings.” This will let you access the “Connections” menu.

  6. Step 3

Choose “Configure Wireless Networks.” Once you're in that window, you'll see a list of the available networks, along with some other options. Select the network you want to use for a connection and tap "OK."

  7. SSID Is Not Present

  8. Step 1

Add the network to the list. Since the network you want to configure isn't broadcasting an SSID, you have to put the information in manually.

  9. Step 2

Go to the “Start” screen and tap “Settings.” This will let you access the “Connections” menu. Choose “Configure Wireless Networks.” Once you're in that window, tap “Add New.”

  10. Step 3

Follow the Axim’s prompts. Give the SSID of the network as well as its authentication and data encryption information as you work through the process. Tap “OK” when you're finished entering all of this information.

Tips & Warnings
  • The service set identifier is similar to a television or radio station’s call sign. Both an SSID and a call sign consist of a specific set of letters and numbers that identify the station or the network to the world.
  • If you're trying to set up a connection to a network that doesn't broadcast an SSID, you may have to contact a network administrator to get the information you need to configure your Dell Axim.
  • Wireless networks have a unique set of security considerations. Consider using an access control or local area network security protocol to protect your data and your privacy.

on 5/11/2008 I am trying to use the instructions relating to when the SSID is NOT broadcast. They seem wrong. I never can get to a place to enter the SSID manually. Please review if you can.
