You synchronize an HP iPAQ using the USB sync cable. Synchronization occurs when your iPAQ is linked to your desktop computer. The devices compare the information stored in their memories and copies new information from one device to the other. The USB sync cable makes this possible because it can support high rates of information transfer. Follow these steps to synchronize an HP iPAQ using the USB Sync cable.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Install ActiveSync on your desktop computer. This is included with the HP iPAQ on a CD. Place in the appropriate drive and follow the wizard's set up instructions.

  2. Step 2

Get the AC adapter for the sync cradle plugged into a working wall outlet. Connect the adapter to the cradle.

  3. Step 3

Plug the USB cable from the universal cradle into a USB port on your desktop computer. When you do not have enough USB ports, unplug a non-critical item, like a gaming joystick.

  4. Step 4

Place the HP iPAQ into the universal cradle. Do not put the HP iPAQ in the cradle upside down. Make sure the charging/communications port on the bottom of the device is fully seated in the universal cradle.

  5. Step 5

Wait for the desktop computer to detect the USB connection. ActiveSync will guide you through the synchronization process.

  6. Step 6

Use the ActiveSync to synchronize information between your computer and HP iPAQ. Install programs on the pocket PC from your desktop or move files between the two devices. You can also select files that you do not want to share between your desktop and your PocketPC.

Tips & Warnings
  • ActiveSync must be installed on your desktop computer before you attempt to synchronize your HP iPAQ to the computer.
  • Set a time to synchronize automatically using the ActiveSync options. You can synchronize while you are charging, so that might be a good time to bring the information stored on your computers in agreement.
  • Use the Microsoft Connect Wizard to guide you through connection set ups. The wizard has advice for any connection, from private networks to modems to email.
  • Do not plug in both the USB cable and the serial cable to the desktop computer. Use only the USB cable to sync your HP iPAQ to your computer.
