If you do not set up Internet access on an HP iPAQ, you are missing out on the bulk of the PocketPC’s appeal. Internet access allows you to check your email, shop online or research topics for school without stopping off at home to get on the desktop computer. Follow these steps to set up Internet access on an HP iPAQ.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Slot the modem card into the appropriate card slot of the HP iPAQ. Some models will require a CompactFlash card while others use an SD card for a modem connection.

  2. Step 2

Get to the “Start” menu on the “Today” screen and use your stylus to tap the “Settings” tab.

  3. Step 3

Tap the “Connections” tab on the “Settings” page. This brings up the “Connection Settings” page which has option for connecting to the Web while at home or at work.

  4. Step 4

Use the pull down menus to select “Internet Connections”. Tap the “Modify” button and then drag down to the “New” option. Depending on the specific model of HP iPAQ, this might be called “Create New” or “Add New”.

  5. Step 5

Name the connection, choose what type of modem you are using and enter the transfer rate for the modem.

  6. Step 6

Tap in the phone number for your Internet service provider. Tap “Next” to confirm the number, and then set the final details of your connection: how many rings to give the modem before hanging up or other extra modem commands.

  7. Step 7

Tap the “Finish” button to save your connection settings. The Internet connection has been set up on your HP iPAQ and is ready to use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the modem card has been recognized and installed on your HP iPAQ. Contact the modem card’s manufacturer for additional guidelines about installing the card on your PocketPC.
  • Use the “Advanced” option to set the TCP/IP addresses if these are needed by your HP iPAQ.
  • Use the “Microsoft Connect Wizard” to guide you through connection set ups. The wizard has advice for any connection, from private networks to modems to email.
  • If you are using a wireless network to establish an Internet connection, beware of interference from other wireless devices. Maintain as close to a line-of-sight connection between the HP iPAQ and other devices in the network to get the strongest signal.
