Skype is a peer-to-peer online communication service that utilizes the VOIP (voice over IP) network, which is similar to networks used for file sharing programs. Skype has grown in popularity in the past several years. Skype offers both free and paid services for its members. These services include voice messaging, video conferencing and personalized customizable Klonies for its members. A Klonie is a customizable digital caricature that represents the Skype member. Skype members can personalize ring tones, pictures and downloads to their member profile. Klonies offer Skype members the ability to create an avatar that represents their appearance and personality. Skype has a three-step process to create your own Klonie. Here's how you do it.

Step1

Select the body type. The first step to creating your Klonie is to decide on your Klonie’s body type. There are three to choose from. You can either be a male (Klonie), a female (Klonie) or a monster (Klonster).

Step2

Create your Klonie. In step 2 you will have four tabbed categories at your disposal. You will be asked to decide on a face for your Klonie prior to choosing the color of your Klonie’s skin, eyes and hair. Clothing styles, background scenes and extra accessories give you hundreds and hundreds of possible customizable combinations for your Klonie’s appearance.

Step3

Buy your Klonie and download. Now that you have created your Klonie, step 3 will require you to download and purchase your creation. To do so you will be asked to sign in with your Skype username and password.

Tips & Warnings

Some of Skype’s features are free, while others are not. Make sure that you are aware of what features you are using. If you want to use its free services only, stay away from any feature or page that requires you to input credit card or bank information.
Skype also has instant messaging, so if you become a member, you might want to get your friends to sign up as well.
Make sure that you download the right Skype programs for the computer that you have. Mac users will want to download the Skype programs that are compatible for Mac systems. Skype also have formats that are suitable for business use.
When creating your Skype account, you will be asked to create a username and password. When deciding on a password, come up with a word that is easy for you to remember, but not a word that would be easy for a friend or stranger to guess. Your Skype account will be linked to a lot of your personal information and, in some cases, your financial information.
