How to Set up an IMAP4 Email Account on an HP iPAQ

IMAP4 is a program that makes it possible to retrieve emails and messages on a server through remote access. It stands for Internet Messaging Access Protocol. It is mainly used for people who want to retrieve their office emails from a remote location. This is very handy to use on a PocketPC for those people who are always on the go. It can be tricky, however, trying to set up an IMAP4 email account on an HP iPAQ. Follow these steps to set up an IMAP4 email account on an HP iPAQ.

  1. Step 1

    Create an email account with a subscription-based server. Yahoo is one option, and for purposes of simplicity, will be the one discussed here. Be sure that you have the Outlook Express program installed on your HP iPAQ.

  2. Step 2

    Open Outlook Express. On the Tools menu (near the top of the program window), choose Accounts.

  3. Step 3

    Click on the Mail tab. Then from that screen, click on the Add button. From the menu provided, click the Mail option.

  4. Step 4

    Type your name in the box labeled Display Name. This will then provide you with a box to type your email address.

  5. Step 5

    Enter your complete Yahoo email address into the Email Address box. Click the Next button.

  6. Step 6

    Select IMAP4 under the menu labeled “My Incoming Mail Server is a…” In the next screen, enter “imap.mail.yahoo.com” in the box labeled Incoming Mail. For the box labeled “Outgoing Mail”, type “smtp.mail.yahoo.com.” After entering these, click Next.

  7. Step 7

    Enter your Yahoo email ID on the next screen. This will be entered into the box labeled Account Name. Then enter your Yahoo email password in the box labeled Password.

  8. Step 8

    Click Next. To finalize your choices and activate your IMAP4 account, click Finish.

Tips & Warnings
  • Before you can access your account, you must authenticate the information. Follow the directions in the Help menu to authenticate your IMAP4 account on your HP iPAQ.
  • For further assistance and troubleshooting tips, visit the manufacturer’s Web site. Many of them have forums and live technical support to help you with your handheld device.
  • Your email will be deleted after you access it unless you setup your account otherwise. To make sure your emails do not get deleted, follow the instructions under the Help menu.
  • You can choose the option to have your IMAP4 program save your password on your device. However, this is not a good idea in case you lose your device or it gets stolen.
