POP3 means Post Office Protocol version 3. It is the most popular email server for personal email accounts. Some examples of POP email accounts include Yahoo, Gmail and AOL. Setting up a POP3 email account for your Treo Smartphone is relatively easy if you follow these easy steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Owner's manual
  • Treo Smartphone
Step1
Gather some necessary information you will need for your setup process. This information includes your email user name, your email password, your account type, your incoming mail server, and your outgoing mail server.
Step2
Go to the "Messaging" option on your phone. Press "Menu" then "Tools" and "New Account." Enter the email address or account that you would like to set up in your phone, then press “Next.”
Step3
Wait for the action to complete. Next, your Smartphone will begin searching for compatible settings associated with that email type. When the Status bar says “Completed,” hit "Next."
Step4
Enter some of your information, including your name, username and password. It will also ask you if you want to save your password for future logins. Choose whichever option you desire and hit "Next."
Step5
Enter your account information. It will now ask you for your account type and also to name your account. If you choose to have more than one email account accessible through your device, this option will identify your account in the list of email accounts in your "Messaging" application. Next, you will be asked to enter your server information, including your incoming mail, outgoing mail and domain. For POP3 accounts, you can leave the domain option blank. That will be filled in automatically. For incoming and outgoing mail, consult your email server for this information.
Step6
Select Options. On the first screen, check the box to enable email checking. If this is your personal account, choose your connection setting as “The Internet.” Press "Next." On the next screen, decide how far back you want your device to receive email. The default is 3 days but that can be changed easily.
Step7
Choose your message options. Next you will be asked how much of a message you wish to see when you sync. Select "Finish." You'll be asked whether you want to download mail for the new account now. Select "Yes" or "No."

Tips & Warnings

  • Obtain an email account before you begin the process of setting up the account through your phone. You can do this by going to the Web site of any of the POP3 servers, such as yahoo.com or gmail.com, clicking the "Sign up" option and following the prompts.
  • Many users prefer to get message headers or just a small portion of the message body when they sync, to save time or data charges.
  • Choose to name your account with something you will remember easily to avoid confusion. It can be different from your name or your username.
  • Any email that you can get only from a Web page, such as Yahoo! standard email (not Yahoo! Mail Plus), is not POP email. You won't be able to view these emails in the Messaging application. Instead, go to the Web browser.
  • If your email provider requires special security settings (port number, SSL, APOP, ESMTP), you must select the “Advanced” option before sending your email.
  • Throughout the process, your Port Number will automatically change depending on your SSL setting. The Port Number SHOULD NOT be changed by the user unless specified by your email provider.
