How to Back Up Data on a Pocket PC to a Computer

If you back up the data on your pocket PC to your computer, you can restore lost files in case of deletion or system corruption. Microsoft ActiveSync makes backing up easy. Just follow these instructions.

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Pocket PC
  1. Step 1

    Install Microsoft ActiveSync. Insert the companion CD that came with your Pocket PC and follow installation instructions.

  2. Step 2

    Connect your Pocket PC to your computer.

  3. Step 3

    Launch ActiveSync on your computer.

  4. Step 4

    Click “Tools” and then “Backup/Restore.”

  5. Step 5

    Select “Full Backup” for the first backup. In subsequent backups, select “Incremental Backup” for a speedier process.

  6. Step 6

    Click “Backup Now.” Then wait. Do not interrupt the process or use your Pocket PC until you see a message that the backup is complete.

  7. Step 7

    To restore data, follow Steps 2 through 4. Then click the “Restore” tab.

  8. Step 8

    Click “Restore Now.”

  9. Step 9

    Select the file you want to restore. It should be named something like “Pocket_PC.”

  10. Step 10

    Click “OK.” Read the warning and then click “Restore.”

  11. Step 11

    Wait. After the restore is complete, disconnect your device and restart it.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can have the device automatically back up each time it connects by checking the appropriate box. However, it is recommended that you use an incremental backup for this.
  • Backups will go faster if you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet as opposed to USB or IR.
  • Before restoring, you must have the same OEM, model number and ROM release as when you did the backup. Also, the Pocket PC must have the same regional and language settings as when you ran the backup.
  • Restoring will overwrite any data saved since the last backup.
