Until you create your GeoCities Web site, visitors will see a generic “place-holder” page that does hold your Web space for you, but is not very personal. You need files to create a Web site that reflects the real you. "File Manager" and "Easy Upload" are two very user-friendly tools that GeoCities provides to get your documents, images, music and other files up on the Web. Read on to learn how to upload files to your GeoCities Web site.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • GeoCities account
  1. Step 1

Sign in to your Yahoo! account and head to the "File Manager" page. You can find this under the “Create and Update” tab on the "GeoCities Control Panel" page. File Manager displays the filenames of all the files currently associated with your site.

  2. Step 2

Click the “Upload Files” button, which is located on the right hand side of the page, both above and below the listing of files that are on your site. This routes you to the "Easy Upload" page.

  3. Step 3

Browse and select files from your computer’s hard drive. Easy Upload allows you to send up to 5 MB of files at any one time, so pay attention to the total size of your upload package.

  4. Step 4

Use the “Upload Files” button to begin the transfer of information from your computer to the File Manager. When the computer is finished, it will send you to a results page, where you can check on the status of each item in the upload packet.

  5. Step 5

Get back to the File Manager and use the HTML editor, copy the files or just change the filename and add the files to your Web site.

Tips & Warnings
  • Here is a shortcut for File Manager: http://geocities.yahoo.com/filemanager.
  • The “Clear” button allows you to get rid of files that you decide not to upload. However, it clears all of the files from a particular batch of uploads.
  • Give your computer time to work while it uploads your files to the Internet. Stand up and do a few stretches or grab a cup of coffee.
  • Refresh the page if things seem to be running slowly or not at all.
  • Do not sign off of the Internet before your computer has finished uploading, otherwise you will have to go through the process again.
  • Filenames cannot contain spaces or special characters. Use letters and numbers only.
