How to Center Text Using Yahoo! PageWizards

Yahoo! PageWizards automatically justifies the text hard left. That means that you could put a ruler down the left edge of the text field. This option is fine, unless you want to do something different, like create a centered column of text. To do so you have to count the spaces that are in each line of text, then place your words carefully to create a centered look. Follow these steps to center text using Yahoo! PageWizards.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
Step1
Get to the “Enter Your Page Title and Text” window of the "Quick Start PageWizard."
Step2
Place your cursor in the “Enter Text” box. Use the space bar to move the cursor from the left side to the right side. Count the number of times you hit the space bar to accomplish this movement.
Step3
Count the number of letters, spaces and characters that you are planning on writing on each line. You have to count every space and every special character as well as the letters.
Step4
Subtract the number of letters, spaces and characters from the number of spaces available in the line. Divide the remainder by two to get the number of times you need to hit the space bar before beginning to type the contents of each line.
Step5
Space the text according to the formula, then check the preview to examine the result as it will appear on your Web site. Optionally, you can type the text for each line, then place the cursor before the first letter and press the space bar the required number of times.

Tips & Warnings

  • What if you have an odd number left over after you subtract the letters, numbers, spaces and characters from the spaces in the line? Then you need to add another space between words or somewhere not very noticeable. You may need to use preview to find the best way to fix this problem.
  • Upper case letters and certain symbols take up more space on the line than others. You will have to experiment with different spacings to find a centered text that works for your GeoCities Web site.
  • You cannot type a block of text in a word processing program, center it, then copy-paste the block into the text field of PageWizards. The formatting will not be applied.
