Browsing other GeoCities Member Web sites lets you indulge your urge to check out the Jones’ and gives you design ideas for your own page. If you are new to building a site, seeing a good example of Web design is the first step in learning how to do it yourself. Follow these steps to browse other GeoCities Member Web sites.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer

Step1
Scroll down to the bottom of the GeoCities Control Panel page and look in the "GeoCities Community" panel for the "GeoCities Directory." Click on this link to go to the "Member Pages Directory."
Step2
Browse the directory. Either enter search terms and find what you want or use the topic list to point you in the right direction. Topics range from business to science.
Step3
Take advantage of the advanced search options to narrow down the results by category or exact matches. Categories group sites by similar content and sometimes have sub-categories to focus your browsing even more.
Step4
Order the listing of sites that fit your browsing criteria by popularity or recent update. Ordering by recent update is best if you are browsing the same topics again, while popularity is a good place to start if you haven’t browsed the Member Directory before.
Step5
Select a site to begin browsing. Use the “Back” and “Forward” buttons on your Internet browser to navigate to new sites or revisit pages that you found interesting.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not be afraid to jump in. GeoCities Web pages are the definition of variety, so any place is a good place to start browsing.
  • If your friends have sent you the URL of their sites, pay them a visit before checking out the rest of GeoCities. Also, ask them for a few of their favorite sites to get you started browsing.
  • In a hurry? Use this shortcut to the Member Pages Directory to start browsing: http://pages.yahoo.com/.
  • Shields up! Keep your virus signatures and firewall up to date when roaming the Internet. Although certain sites are more likely to harbor programs harmful to your computer, you can’t tell that at a glance.
