Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make sure to stop by the Empire State Plaza—Albany’s version of Rockefeller Center and even officially dubbed Nelson A. Rockefeller State Plaza. In addition to the dozens upon dozens of modern sculptures, the plaza is also made dramatically eye-catching by the structures that surround it—from the offbeat "Egg" (the Performing Arts Center) to the towering Corning Tower.
Step2
Visit the Albany Institute of History & Art, a paean to the region’s past told through the works of its most acclaimed artists. The galleries focused on ancient Egypt are also intriguing.
Step3
When dining out, consider a meal at Jack’s Oyster House on State Street, an old-school throwback dating to 1913 that is a favorite of both locals and visitors. The large wood-paneled booths and black and white photos dotting the walls add to the old-time ambience, while a classy wait staff serves a menu built around steak and seafood.
Step4
Head to Lark Street for a nice afternoon of shopping and strolling about. Old brownstones and funky ethnic eateries mix with cool bars and cafés, and some locals consider the neighborhood to be the "Greenwich Village" of their city; Lark Street is two blocks west of the Empire Plaza.
Step5
Check out some sports that offer a cool alternative to big-time pro teams—such as the Arena Football League’s Albany Conquest, or the minor-league hockey Albany River Rats. Hoop fans will enjoy the minor-league Albany Patroons, and anyone who liked the movie ‘Bull Durham’ will be entertained by the Class-A Tri-Valley Cats.
Step6
See what’s happening at the Palace Theatre, a grand old showcase of big-name music and comedy headliners as well as classic films. The Palace, located on Clinton Avenue, was built in 1931 and is a true throwback to the theaters of yesteryear.
Step7
Savor the bygone elegance of centuries past by visiting the Schuyler Mansion, a 1761 Georgian-style home embellished by fine period furnishings and decorative arts. The Catherine Street structure also has an amazing history, which you can soak in on a tour, including playing host to George Washington and Benjamin Franklin.
