Sometimes navigating your Geocities File Manager can be a little tricky and you might need a little bit of assistance. Here is how to rename a file on your Geocities file manager in just a few steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Open your Internet browser. Go to the Geocities start page.

  2. Step 2

Log on to your account. Enter your name and password. If you are not signed up with Geocities, just follow the links to set up an account.

  3. Step 3

Find the "Create and Update" tab on your account's startup page. It is light purple and should be near the top of the page. Click the tab and it will turn to dark purple and put you in the right place to find your File Manager.

  4. Step 4

Look for the section named "File Management Tools." It should be almost all the way down the page towards the bottom. There you will see the link to your File Manager. After you click the link, another page will open and you will need to click the dark blue link that says "Open File Manager." Now, your file manager is open.

  5. Step 5

Locate the file that you want to rename. All the file names are on the right hand side of the page. You can scroll up and down until you see the file name you need to change.

  6. Step 6

Check the box next to the file name that you need to change. After you do that, scroll back up towards the top of the page and look for the gray "Rename" button. It is between "Copy" and "Delete" and below your Web pages address.

  7. Step 7

Click the "Rename" button. This will open a new window that has a place for your file’s new name. You will see the current name and a blank space for the new one below it.

  8. Step 8

Type in the new file name. Click "Rename file." You'll know the file was successfully renamed to the new filename when you see this message: filename.jpg was successfully renamed to newfilename.jpg.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you aren't sure what file you need to rename, you can use the view feature and see what the file looks like.
  • Make sure that you include the file's extension. These include jpg, gif, htm and txt.
  • Do not forget there are characters that you cannot put into the file name. You cannot use spaces or any special characters.
