Adding a counter to a GeoCities Web site simply requires an understanding of standard Yahoo! programs. GeoCities is an online community hosted by Yahoo! where GeoCities members are given a personal Web page and all of the Yahoo! tools needed to edit and maintain it. Yahoo’s main page-building/editing program is Yahoo! PageBuilder. Understanding how to use this program is the key to managing your GeoCities Web page. Follow these steps to add a counter to your GeoCities Web site.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • Yahoo! account
  1. Step 1

Open Yahoo! PageBuilder. This is the program you use to create and edit your Web page. Find the PageBuilder icon or open it from the Programs list.

  2. Step 2

Locate the “Add-On” Button. The toolbar at the top of the screen contains a dozen icons. Each icon represents a different button with a different function. Click the “Add-Ons” button and a smaller Add-Ons screen will open.

  3. Step 3

Use the Add-On Screen. On the left side of this screen (labeled “Categories”), click the word “Basics.” Then on the right side (labeled “Add-Ons”), click the “Counters” icon. This will open a window that will ask you to set the visual properties of the counter.

  4. Step 4

Use the Counter Properties window. In this window, you can manipulate the style, color and size of the counter. The styles are based on different fonts and calligraphy styles for the numbers in the counter. You can choose the color of the numbers and the background color. You also can manipulate the size of the counter.

  5. Step 5

Watch for the counter. After deciding on the counter’s properties, the counter will appear. You can click on it and drag it into place wherever you like. Traditionally, counters are placed at the bottom of a Web page.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose colors that match the overall appearance of your Web page. People who visit your page will notice your counter. Make sure it has a positive affect on them. The counter is part of your page’s physical appearance. Make sure you choose colors that are easy to read.
  • Choose a font style for your counter that is easy to read. There are many different font styles to choose from. You can make the numbers in your counter as basic or as fancy as you like. However, some font styles deform numbers and make them hard to read.
  • Counters usually are at the bottom of the page, but the location is up to you.
  • Before adding a counter or making any changes to your Web page design, remember to save your Web page’s current layout so that you don’t lose what you already have.
