How to Show That You Are Available to Chat on Skype

Changing your status on Skype informs other Skype contacts that you are available for chat. You can also show your status on the Web so visitors to your blog or Web site know you are available for Skype chat.

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  • Skype account

    Change Your Online Status on Skype

  1. Step 1

    Install Skype. Visit the Skype Web site, go to the "Download" page and click "Download now." Follow the steps to register.

  2. Step 2

    Open Skype. Double click the icon in your system tray or on the desktop. Or find the icon in your Start menu.

  3. Step 3

    Log in. Type in your user name and password and click "Sign in."

  4. Step 4

    Click "File" in the top left corner of the Skype window to open the File menu.

  5. Step 5

    Click "Change Online Status." Then select "Skype Me!"

  6. Step 6

    Read the notice. If this is your first time using this Skype feature, a message will pop up informing you of what you are about to do.

  7. Step 7

    Once you have read the message, click "OK." Check the "Do not display this message again" box if you do not want to read the message again.

  8. Show Your Status on the Web With Skype

  9. Step 1

    Open the Options menu. In the Skype window, click "Tools," then "Options," and then click the "Privacy" tab. Check the box next to "Allow my status to be shown on the web."

  10. Step 2

    Visit the Skype Web site. Click "Skype buttons" under the "Share" heading.

  11. Step 3

    Use the "Skype buttons wizard." Enter your name and select a button that displays your status. Choose whether you want to embed your button into an email or a Web site.

  12. Step 4

    Copy and paste the code into your Web site or email. Right click the editable text box with the HTML code and select "Copy." Now simply paste the code into an email or your blog entry composer. The Skype button will show up on your Web site or blog, or in your email.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure HTML is enabled before pasting a code into an email or blog.
  • You can select other status options the same way you select "Skype Me!" They will be displayed on your Web site, too.
  • Users that click your button on the Web will automatically call you.
  • You must have Skype installed for Skype Web buttons to function.
  • When you are available for random chat, users that you may not know will contact you.
