How to Call a Regular Phone with Skype

Rate: (0 Ratings)

Besides making Internet calls from computer to computer, Skype can be used to call regular home telephones. Skype calls to home phones require more software, but it's part of the Skype service and you'll catch on quickly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Headset
  • Skype account
Step1
Once you have downloaded the free Skype software and created an account, you will have access to other Skype applications, which includes SkypeOut.
Step2
Download and activate the SkypeOut software. This enables you on your computer to make calls to home phones over the Internet.
Step3
Purchase Skype credit to connect to any phone for at least 1 minute. If you plan to talk for a long period or place an international call, purchase enough credit to hedge against being cut off during a call.
Step4
Before you make a call, you'll need information--the country you're calling, country code, phone number. Look up the rates on Skype and see if low-rate calling times vary.
Step5
Input call information into SkypeOut, then place your call.

Tips & Warnings

  • To find out your per-minute rate for any call, look it up under the currency you'll be paying in on the SkypeOut dialing page. Estimate how much Skype credit you'll need for your call and make sure you have enough in your account.
  • Be sure to enter your own area code when dialing out to receive accurate rates.
  • Skype does not enable you to make phone calls to emergency numbers or services.
