Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
Choosing the Right RAM
Step1
Review the programs that you use on your iBook on a regular basis. If the programs are running slowly or are graphics and audio intensive, go in for a new upgraded RAM configuration.
Step2
Check the RAM configuration currently in your iBook. This will give you an idea of your new RAM's requirements. Consider the maximum RAM configuration that your iBook can support. For example, a 12-inch iBook G3 500 MHz has a fixed memory size of 64 MB and can support up to 576 MB of RAM. Similarly, a 14-inch iBook G3 900 MHz has a fixed memory of 128 MB size and can support RAM up to maximum of 640 MB.
Step3
Decide how often you will use the multimedia functions. The use of multimedia calls for higher RAM size.
Step4
Weigh the available options for upgrading your RAM while using the old RAM as well. This can save a lot of money.
Step5
Plan your budget for the new RAM.
Step6
Search the Internet using Google or Yahoo for product specifications and prices of RAM.
Step7
Browse online auction Web sites such as eBay, ubid.com and overstock.com (see links, below). You may get great deals at auction sites.
Step8
Compare the prices of different brands offering similar RAM types and sizes. Check out online buyers’ guides such as Epinions, Nextag and MySimon (see links, below). These sites offer a comparison of various RAM chips and list vendors and prices.
Step9
Buy RAM from retailers such as Circuit City or Best Buy (see links, below). You can also visit any of these stores and learn more about your options.
Step10
Talk to the store’s technical expert or customer service and buy the best RAM chip that suits your computer.
Step11
Choose a payment method. When buying online, you usually have to pay by credit card or through PayPal (see link, below). Verify the authenticity of the Web site before purchasing online. Look for the "lock" symbol in the status bar and if you roll your mouse pointer over it, it should state, "128 bit encryption."
