To troubleshoot an HP photo inkjet printer, there are many roads you can follow since many things can go wrong. However, troubleshooting can be easily managed. Follow these steps to troubleshoot an HP photo inkjet printer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • HP photo inkjet printer
  1. Step 1

Start with the test page. If your printer is not printing or printing poorly, print a test page. Refer to your owner’s manual for how to print and interpret a test page, as it differs by model.

  2. Step 2

Remove the cartridge and inspect it. Receiving a message or a flashing light indicates there is something wrong with the cartridge. Make sure the cartridge is intact and then reinstall it in the correct slot with latches closed.

  3. Step 3

Fix paper feeding problems by feeding the paper into the printer manually. If this fails, inspect the printer for a paper jam.

  4. Step 4

Check the printer cables. Inspect them for dust or moisture. Check for any bent or broken pins. Wipe them gently and securely plug them back in.

  5. Step 5

Download the latest drivers from your printer’s manufacturer’s Web site. Occasionally, this will fix a bug with an HP photo inkjet printer.

  6. Step 6

Print photos using a different program than the one you used when problems occurred. A simple program sometimes works better with a printer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Doing a “soft reset” of your printer by simply turning it off to clear its internal memory can sometimes fix the problem.
  • You can remove and reinstall your printer’s hardware as a more extreme version of the “soft reset.” This will cure any problem that is software related, so long as it doesn’t still exist on your computer as a virus of some kind.
  • Use the “printer troubleshooting tool” if your computer has one. It was installed on Windows 95 and later.
  • Remove cartridges gently so that you don’t damage to the printer.
