For networking purposes, most of today's printers are able to connect to Ethernet or wireless networks. For those who have multiple computers at home, this is helpful when trying to print from various computers. Follow these steps to find out if an inkjet printer can be added to a network.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Inkjet printer
  1. Step 1

Connect your printer to your network. Your computer(s) will either run through an Ethernet or wireless network. Hook your printer up to whichever you use between computers.

  2. Step 2

Load the printer's install disc. Do this on the computer that you are planning on using most for printing purposes. Open the configuration wizard for your printer.

  3. Step 3

Install your printer. When going through the installation process, be sure to choose the correct model of printer. Also be sure to input the settings for your network, or that during installation, your computer automatically detects them for you so that your printer will adhere to the network and to each individual computer.

  4. Step 4

Open the "Printer Setup" utility on your computer. Select "Add Printer." A dropdown menu will appear. Choose the printer you have just installed. This should allow you to add your printer to your computer as well as your network.

  5. Step 5

Install printer software onto other network computers. This process should be the same for each additional computer. This will ensure that your printer has the ability to print from all computers on the network.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you purchase your printer, be sure to know which network (Ethernet or wireless) you're going to use so that connecting is easier and no other supplies are necessary.
  • You can go into the preferences on your computer to enable it to automatically detect your network settings prior to installation. This will make the process smoother.
  • If this does not work with your printer, you might need to call the printer manufacturer or your computer company to make sure the printer and computer are compatible.
