You can build your own computer at home using a barebones kit. The customization helps you to assemble the right kind of configuration. To do this, you will need a computer that has only a few parts that are not functioning well. Building a computer allows you to have an assembly of features that may not be provided in branded computers. It also may be a cheaper option. Here’s how to build a computer using a barebones kit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Step1
Plan your budget for the computer kit you want to buy.
Step2
Make a list of the new components you require for your computer. Classify them into essential and non-essential items. Buy the items in that order. You can slash some of the non-essential items in case the cost exceeds your budget.
Step3
Build an assembly of the hardware according to the instruction manuals provided with the components. Hardware accessories usually come with a detailed instruction booklet that shows how the parts can be assembled into the system. In most cases, the manuals have good sketches with numbered parts and instructions in sequential order.
Step4
Pay attention to computer’s key components, such as hard drive, processor and the RAM. All of these fit on the motherboard. A computer case, otherwise known as the CPU, encloses it.
Step5
Confirm that you have the right tools. At the very least, you will need to have screwdrivers, tweezers and a flashlight. Refer to the instruction manual and assemble all necessary tools.
Step6
Ensure uninterrupted power supply (UPS) to your computer.
Step7
Install the processor, hard drive and RAM on the motherboard. Make sure you configure the hard drive.
Step8
Set up and configure the CD-ROM and Floppy Drive.
Step9
Install the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) and test it.
Step10
Fix the operating system Windows. Install it through the hard drive and not a CD drive. Remember, hard drives work faster than CD drives.
Step11
Visit the PC Mechanic Web site (see link below) in case you face an unexpected problem.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose parts that are compatible with each other.
  • Consider installing with a friend, a technology expert, or get someone who is proficient in installing a computer using a barebones kit.
  • Follow the sequence according to instruction manual.
  • Do not let the parts stay out in the open for a long time. They may gather dust and this could result in damage to the computer.
  • Do not force the parts into the slots. If the parts don’t fit, maybe you are doing something wrong. Double check the instruction manual or you may end up with broken hardware.
