A USB flash memory reader quickly transfers data and images between your computer and the flash memory card. Some of the most popular flash memory readers work with all types of digital camera memory cards, including SmartMedia, ATA cards and CompactFlash. Here’s how to read flash memory using the flash reader.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the driver for your flash memory reader is installed on your computer and is detected by your system.

  2. Step 2

Plug in the flash memory reader to the USB port. Single connections will require you to remove the memory card from your digital camera and insert it in the slot of the flash memory reader. Other products and models may allow you to directly plug into the digital camera without removing the memory card from the camera.

  3. Step 3

Insert the memory card properly. An arrow indicating the slot and position for the card will be indicated on your flash memory reader.

  4. Step 4

Check the LED status when in use. A plugged-in flash memory reader with a memory card will display a light on the LED, indicating that the device has been detected by your computer and is in use.

  5. Step 5

Read and write data using the flash memory reader. The method to read and write will depend on your computer’s operating system.

  6. Step 6

Verify your operating system. For Mac users, the flash memory card will appear on the desktop when in use. Documents and data files are read like any other folder or drive within the computer. Windows users will have to click on “My Computer” and “Locate Removable Drive.” It will be indexed as D: or E: depending on the listing of other drives in your computer. Data can be read the same way as you would read any other folder or drive on your computer.

  7. Step 7

Unplug the flash memory reader when finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • Read the product manual for complete information on installation.
  • Check the compatibility of the reader with your digital camera before buying or installing.
  • Compatibility of the memory reader with your computer is vital. Some use a USB 2.0 port, while others will work on a USB 1.1 port.
