How to Beam a Ringtone to Someone From a Treo Smartphone

Among the cool features on your cutting-edge Treo Smartphone are polyphonic ringing tones. You can annoy everyone on the train by checking out all of your ring tones, but what do you do when you run out? You need to get some more. You can download ring tones from the Internet, and you can easily share them between friends using your phone's infrared and Bluetooth connections. Just think how much more annoying it will be to have the same ring tone coming from two different phones, in stereo!

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

1. Select "Settings" on your Treo Smartphone.
2. Click the "Personal" tab. Select "Sounds and Notifications." This opens a new window.
3. Select the "Manage" tab on the new window.
4. Decide which ring tone you wish to send and select it by highlighting it (move to it so that it's selected by using the navigational key).
5. Press the "Menu" key.
6. Select "Beam." The Treo Smartphone searches for all Bluetooth devices within range and will display a list for you.
7. Select which device you wish to send your ring tone to, and press "Send."

Tips & Warnings

• To use Bluetooth, the devices must be in range of each other (normally about 9 feet or 3 meters).
• You can also transmit ring tones by infrared. Infrared is a much slower technology, though, and the ring-tone files are quite large and slow to transfer.
• Ring tones can be transmitted to your computer or PDA. You can also reverse the direction and transmit files from your computer, which is extremely useful when you create or download ring tones on your computer.
• You can download new ring tones from the Internet, or make your own from any MIDI files.
• Be careful when downloading from the Internet. Make sure your virus database is up to date before attempting to download any ring tones.
