In a home office, space is often an issue. By using a multifunction printer, you will have all of the necessary tools right at your fingertips, without taking up too much space.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Set a budget. Decide how much you can afford to spend and do not go over that amount.

  2. Step 2

Choose the functions that you really need for your home office. Look for models that are strong in those functions. For example, you may not really need fax capabilities, so the quality of the fax machine on the device will not impact your decision very much.

  3. Step 3

Read reviews, ratings and articles. Go online and look at the manufacturers' Web sites to check out the specs of the models. Some sites will help you choose the right printer for you, or give you recommendations.

  4. Step 4

Decide how you will be using the device. If you plan on using it for color documents often, then an inkjet will work. If you are just concerned about text, then laser monochrome models will be cheap and functional.

  5. Step 5

Get a warranty. Make sure that the warranty you are getting covers parts and labor for all components of your device. Get a written warranty that specifies what is covered. It always is a good idea to opt for on-site service, in case something happens to the device.

  6. Step 6

Choose a high resolution. Usually, higher resolution means higher quality. You will need at least 600x600, unless you plan on using it primarily for text.

  7. Step 7

Learn how to operate and maintain the device. Read the manual carefully. Know what your equipment can do, so you can use it to your full advantage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not sacrifice quality just because it is for the home office. You will need a good multifunction printer that prints professional documents.
  • Inkjets tend to be cheap and print in color, but also slower. Laser models are faster, but laser color models are a lot more expensive than laser monochrome models.
  • Pay attention to compatibility. Many multifunction devices are not compatible with both Apple and Windows operating systems. Know whether the device is compatible with your computer before you buy it.
