Make Your Own Scented Body Lotion

Buying fragranced body lotions from specialty stores can get pretty pricey. Why not pamper your skin and your wallet by purchasing an unscented lotion base and adding your own designer scent? It’s super easy and ensures you get the exact fragrance you love. This body lotion recipe is also a great way to give stocking stuffers for those lotion lovers on your Christmas list.

From Quick Guide: Fragrance Guide
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fragrance (either essential or fragrance oils)
  • 1 eye dropper
  • 1 large metal or glass mixing bowl
  • Liquid colorant (optional)
  • 1 kitchen funnel
  • 1 garbage bag
  • Self adhesive labels
  • 16 oz bottle of unscented body lotion base
  • 4 4 oz lotion bottles
  • 1 metal spoon or rubber spatula

    Prepare Your Lotion Base

  1. Step 1

You’ll first need to purchase your supplies from a reputable distributor. You want a good quality lotion base so that your lotion will stack up against the expensive store bought versions. Check the resource section of a lotion ingredients supplier.

  2. Step 2

You will need a clean, clutter free work space to create your scented body lotion. A kitchen table or counter covered in a plastic garbage bag works great.

  3. Step 3

Pour your unscented lotion base into a large clean glass or metal bowl. You may need to put the lid back on the lotion base bottle and turn it upside down for a while to let the lotion that is clinging to the sides drop down. You don’t want to waste any of that great lotion.

  4. Step 4

Once all the unscented body lotion base is in your bowl, you are ready to proceed to the fragrance adding step of this lotion recipe.

  5. Step 5

You can choose to scent your body lotion with any number of essential or fragrance oils. For true aromatherapy body lotion you’ll want to use only pure essential oils. Want a fruity scent like mango or strawberry? Most fruit fragrances, along with scents such as coffee or vanilla, can only be achieved by using high quality synthetic fragrance oils. See the second section of this article for some fragrance recipes.

  6. Step 6

To ensure a great smelling lotion, use 2 to 3 oz of fragrance per 16 oz of unscented body lotion base. For a lotion recipe that is lighter on scent, use less essential oil or fragrance oil in the beginning—you can always add more to strengthen the scent.

  7. Step 7

You may also want to color your body lotion. Be sure to use high quality skin safe liquid colorants that are approved for use in body products. A reputable supplier will have these available. Go light on the colorant as it is just for show. Try 3 to 4 drops from an eye dropper at first. You can always add more later on, but try to aim for a light shade of color.

  8. Step 8

Now mix your scented and colored lotion base thoroughly with a metal spoon or rubber spatula that will not be used for food again (due to contamination as the rubber will likely soak up some of the essential or fragrance oils).

  9. Step 9

Once your body lotion is well blended you’re ready to bottle your creation. Be sure your empty bottles are clean before using. Using a small kitchen funnel, slowly transfer your body lotion from the bowl to the small bottles. Be patient as it may take a while for your lotion to pass through the funnel.

  10. Step 10

When all the lotion bottles have been filled, place the caps tightly on the bottles and label the bottles with self adhesive labels. Write what is in the bottle and what scent it is.

  11. Step 11

Store your lotions in a cool dry place to ensure they keep as long as possible.

  12. Fragrance Blends

  13. Step 1

Relaxation body lotion--40 drops Sandalwood essential oil and 20 drops Patchouli essential oil.

  14. Step 2

Lavender body lotion--80 drops of Lavender essential oil.

  15. Step 3

Coffee Lover’s body lotion--2 oz coffee fragrance oil and 1 oz vanilla fragrance oil.

  16. Step 4

Tropical fragrance oil--2 oz mango fragrance oil and 1 oz coconut fragrance oil.

Tips & Warnings
  • To make your lotions into great looking Christmas gifts, purchase self adhesive labels and use a computer program such as Microsoft Word’s label maker to create fun labels for your lotions.
  • Not all essential oils are safe for use on skin. Be sure to read up on essential oils before adding any to your body lotion recipe. See the resource box for great essential oil information.

on 7/15/2008 Lotions should only be scented at 2-4% of the total weight.. so if your making 16 ounces about 1-2 teaspoons of fragrance oil is all you would need.
