How to Book Train Travel From Oslo to Bergen

Bergen is a city with medieval architecture and a modern, international outlook, and it's well worth taking the train trip from Oslo, especially as this trip is renowned as one of the world's most breathtakingly lovely train rides. On the ride you will see both spectacular mountains and sparkling fjords as you travel from Norway's central region along the beautiful southern seacoast and over to the western coast.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
To book accommodations, contact Norwegian State Railways at +47 815 00 888 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below). Select Oslo as your 'From' city and Bergen as your 'To' city from the drop-down menus provided. Enter the date and time you would like to travel.
Step2
Choose the number and type of tickets you need. Business travelers and those who need to feel constantly 'connected' may wish to consider the 'Komfort' accommodations, which feature not only roomier seats but also laptop and cell phone outlets. Travelers who wish to relax and enjoy the scenery, however, will find nothing to complain about with regard to the economy seats on this 6 to 8 hour trip.
Step3
Calculate the price of your ticket. This will be shown to you in Norwegian Kroner, so you may wish to use an online currency converter to help you with this step. Submit all requested personal and payment information, and order your ticket.
Step4
Pick up your tickets at the Oslo train station before you travel. Be sure to allow for some time before you have to board the train, in case there is a long line at the ticket window. Lines can be particularly long during the Christmas or Easter holiday weeks or during the height of summer vacation season.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to book your travel for the daytime hours, and hope for a sunny day! It would be a shame to miss any of the beautiful scenery.
  • If you travel anytime between mid-November and the end of December, be sure to check out the 'Gingersnap City'--a miniature version of Bergen made entirely of gingersnap cookies!
  • Bergen is known for being quite rainy, so bring an umbrella. Even in winter, rain is more common than snow along the coast.
