Stay in Accra, the capital of Ghana, for access to colorful craft markets, the National Museum, Revolution Square and several other attractions. Located just off the Gulf of Guinea, Accra also has several beautiful beaches. Luxury 4-star accommodations run between $200 and $500 per night.

Stay in Kumasi in the Ashanti region of central Ghana to experience an African city that is decidedly African. Large, bustling markets with local arts and crafts attract visitors from all over the country. Luxury and budget accommodations can be found.

Choose hotels in towns along the coast of Ghana such as Cape Coast and Elmina for proximity to attractions related to the slave trade history of the region. Luxury 4-star accommodations can be found from about $95 to $200 per night.
Get to and Around Ghana

Fly into Kotoka International Airport in Accra for the easiest entry into the country. Several major European airlines and a few American airlines fly regular flights to Ghana. The airport is modern and functional.

Take a taxi from the airport to the Accra city center. Taxi fares should be less than $5.

The easiest way to get around Accra is to hire a car and a driver by the hour or by the day. You can have a personal driver for the entire day for less than $100. Check with your hotel to make arrangements.

All phone numbers include the international prefix "011." When calling internationally but not from the United States or Canada, substitute that "011" with "00." All country codes are within parentheses and begin with a "+" sign.
To hail a taxi in Ghana, wave your arm and then point to the ground in front of you. Negotiate a fare before leaving. To be sure you are getting a fair rate, ask someone at your hotel how much the trip should cost.
English is the official language of Ghana.
Cedis (GHC) are the currency used in Ghana. Euros are also widely accepted throughout the country.
Don't drink the tap water. To be safe, choose bottled water or carbonated beverages instead.
Be forewarned that there is a lot of corruption in Ghana. Bribes are generally expected from the police.
Visit your physician for necessary vaccination and prophylaxis prior to your visit. Malaria, yellow fever, Hepatitis A and B, cholera and typhoid are present.
