Things You'll Need:
- Internet access
- Passport
-
Step 1
Understand that Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world, even though health and education levels have risen and poverty has decreased in recent years.
-
Step 2
Know that most women in Bangladesh wear a sari, although many are starting to wear Western clothing. Men generally wear European styles and reserve the kurta-paejama for religious occasions.
-
Step 3
Expect to spend 30 to 300 taka (about $.40 to $4) per meal if you're eating on a budget or at mid-level restaurants. A high-end restaurant may cost upward of 700 taka (near $10). (For currency exchange rates, see Resources.)
-
Step 4
Pack adapters for European outlets and South African/Indian-style plugs so you can use your electrical devices without any problems.
-
Step 1
Use the internal waterway system to navigate around the country if you don't mind traveling at a slower pace. The system is well-developed and heavily used.
-
Step 2
Travel to your destination via train if you prefer to arrive a bit faster. Major routes are fairly simple, though routes from Dhaka to points to the west are more complicated due to unbridged rivers.
-
Step 1
To book accommodations, contact Bangladesh Online at 011 (+880) 2 8119192 or visit their Web site (see Resources, below). Book in a mid-level chain hotel common in the United States for value and comfort. Your stay will cost approximately $70 to $90 per night.
-
Step 2
Stay in luxury accommodations for a real treat. A room in the heart of Dhaka may cost between $100 and $270 per night.
-
Step 3
Budget 60 to 300 taka per night for low-level accommodations. Not many of these motels have Web sites to book reservations, so you may want to explore the wallet-friendly options after staying in another motel for a night or two.
