Algeria is an African country that sits in the Sahara Desert. In the past, this country has been plagued with civil wars. But now peace has returned and visitors are once again welcome to visit this amazing country.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • French phrasebook
  • Internet access
  • Passport
  • Arabic phrasebook
  • Valid visitor's visa

Know Your Destination

Step1
Speak Arabic or French. Both of these languages are spoken throughout the country of Algeria.
Step2
Convert your U.S. dollars to Algerian dinar (see Resources, below).

Organize Your Algeria Transportation

Step1
Book your international air travel. The two international airports in Algeria are located near Algiers and Tamanrasset. Both of these cities also have a good selection of accommodations for tourists.
Step2
Find safe transportation. It is highly recommended that you travel in some sort of vehicle while touring Algeria. You can hire a driver, rent a car or take a bus to get to your hotel or to get from your hotel to the destinations that interest you.

Choose Your Lodging in Algeria

Step1
Find accommodations in the capital city of Algiers. Here you will find the remnants of the ancient capital city of Algiers.
Step2
Book your accommodations near the center of Algiers. This will put you within minutes of the pubs, restaurants and the city's nightlife.
Step3
Find accommodations in the city of Tamanrasset. This city is the largest Turareg city in the world.
Step4
Book your accommodations in Tamanrasset near the marketplace. If you like to shop, then you will love staying in Tamanrasset. It offers daily markets and great places to eat.
Step5
Save money on your accommodations by booking your room in Tamanrasset instead of in Algiers. This city offers lower priced rooms than Algiers.
Step6
Respond to the call of the wild and camp out. There are several camping sites available near Tamanrasset, as well as in other locations in Algeria.

Tips & Warnings

  • Register with the U.S. Embassy when you land in Algeria. The U.S. Embassy in Algeria is now fully staffed and operational, so if you have any problems while visiting this country, you have someone to turn to for help.
  • Minor terror attacks are still possible, but this country is basically secure and safe.
  • Crime of all varieties is still a major problem in Algeria, so it is recommended that you don't travel without a vehicle or a guide.
