How to Troubleshoot an Epson Photo Inkjet Printer

1. Check the set-up. The printer needs to be powered on, plugged in and connected to your computer to function properly. Sometimes it's easy to overlook an unplugged printer.
2. Check the status of your printer. Flashing lights, yellow lights, red lights, error messages—these are all signs that something is amiss with your printer. Refer to the manual to find out what they mean.
3. Check the paper. Look to see if there is paper in the tray and it is loaded correctly. There also could be a paper jam. Check the manual to see how to clear it properly.
4. Print some test pages. Use your printer’s self-test or open up "Printer Properties" on your computer and run a test from there. If the test has errors in it, you may need to clean and align your printheads.
5. Clean the nozzles and/or printheads. This is done from the "Printer Properties" menu. Find the "Maintenance" tab and run the "Clean Nozzles or Printheads" operations. This usually aligns your printheads as well.
6. Replace the ink cartridge. If you have run out of ink, replace the cartridge. Find out which cartridge is empty and replace it with an identical new cartridge.
7. Reinstall or update the drivers. If the self-test looks good, you might need to install new drivers. Look for drivers at the Epson Web site.
