Things You'll Need:
- HP Photo Inkjet printer
-
Step 1
Check cables and power. Double check to make sure no cables are loose and the printer is getting power. The green light should turn on when you press the on switch.
-
Step 2
Check printer status. A flashing light or a pop up alert are your printer’s way of telling you what’s wrong. Read the error messages carefully and refer to your manual to see what you should do.
-
Step 3
Clear paper jams. If paper is stuck inside the printer, either gently pull it out or refer to the manual for trickier paper jams.
-
Step 4
Print a test page. This can be done with a self-test or from the "Printer Properties," found under "Control Panel."
-
Step 5
Use the test page. The test page should give you an idea of what’s wrong with your printer. If there are white bars, splotches, faded colors or uneven patterns you need to align and clean the printheads.
-
Step 6
Run the printer’s maintenance operations. This is done from the same page from which you printed the test page.
-
Step 7
Replace cartridges. When ink runs low it’s time to buy a new cartridge. Take note of the part number and replace it with the same.
-
Step 8
Patch or update drivers. Check the HP Web site for new drivers, especially if you have installed a new operating system.

on 7/31/2009 My HP F4280 had a paper jam or carriage stuck error that only cleared by unplugging the cord from the unit, removing the cartridges, and holding the CANCEL and PAPER buttons (while reinserting the cord) until it starts to reset. The error clears after reinserting the cartridges, but comes back if you lose power. HP said new cartridges would fix the problem.
