Digital cameras use flash memory to store pictures. A higher memory flash card makes sense especially when you are staying away from your computer for a long period and need to store a large number of pictures in your camera at a time. Here is how to choose the right flash memory for your digital camera.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Digital camera
  1. Step 1

Determine how you plan on using your digital camera. Selecting the right memory flash card depends on how you use the camera.

  2. Step 2

Consider the type of memory card that is available for your camera. These include Secure Digital, Memory Stick, xD Picture Card and CompactFlash. You can read your product specification manual to find out which type your camera uses. You can also get more information from the company Web site or by asking the helpdesk of the manufacturer.

  3. Step 3

Determine the number of days you will be away from your computer and the number of pictures you have to store at a time in your digital camera. If you plan on having a large number of pictures, you will need a higher capacity. The amount of memory also depends on the image resolution and color of your photos.

  4. Step 4

Remember, only professional cameras DSLR (digital single-lens reflex) or SLR (single-lens reflex) support compressed images. Most compact cameras do not prop up uncompressed images. For example, if you have a two mega-pixel image resolution, the storage capacity for compressed images of 64 MB will be a 0.9 MB file size. Similarly, if you have a four mega-pixel image resolution, the storage capacity for uncompressed images of 256 MB will be a 6 MB file size.

  5. Step 5

Plan your budget. Expect to pay more for a higher memory card.

  6. Step 6

Compare the prices of different brands.

Tips & Warnings
  • Using a higher memory card ensures that you don't have to worry about running out of space.
  • Having a number of small cards is recommended when you want to organize your pictures.
  • Avoid taking unnecessary pictures with higher resolutions as it occupies more space.
  • Format the card regularly in order to prevent the crashing of the card and losing precious pictures.
