MySpace can be an effective tool for launching a freelance enterprise or looking for a steady gig. Follow these steps to find out how you can use MySpace to launch your career:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Internet access
  • MySpace account
  • Computer

    Countdown

  1. Step 1

Create a new MySpace account. Make this one distinct from your personal account. You do not want clients or employers viewing your wild party pictures and getting the wrong idea.

  2. Step 2

View the classifieds page. There is a link on the top bar that reads "Classifieds.” Click it.

  3. Step 3

Select your location. Click “Change City” in the top left if the city displayed is not yours. Choose the city nearest to you.

  4. Step 4

Browse jobs. Click on any headings that interest you and see what there is to offer. If you have something specific in mind, go ahead and use the search feature.

  5. Step 5

Post an ad. Click on “Post Ad” in the top right corner of the classifieds page. Follow the instructions to post your resume or advertise your services.

  6. Step 6

Join some groups. There may be no business prospects now, but start rubbing elbows with the right people by getting involved in the community. Under the “MySpace Friends” heading select a link that interests you and begin networking.

  7. Step 7

Visit MySpace Jobs. This is a separate section of MySpace specifically devoted to finding a career.

  8. Step 8

Search MySpace Jobs. Type in some keywords and your location and then click search. Browse the results. If you find something you like, click the link for more details and contact information for that employer.

  9. Step 9

Post your resume on MySpace Jobs. On the MySpace Jobs homepage there is a link for “Post Your Resume.” This brings you to MySpace’s partner website that will let you post your resume for free.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is possible to make a bit of money with a high-traffic MySpace page. Many advertising companies have referral programs that will pay you per click.
  • You can browse internships and part-time jobs on MySpace Jobs as well. Scroll down to the list of keywords and choose one that interests you.
  • Always have a professional resume ready while searching for jobs.
  • Beware of scams. The Internet is a haven for shifty pyramid schemes and fake “work-at-home” jobs. Make sure an employer is legit before sending them any personal information.

on 1/29/2007 Another excellent career tool provided by myspace is the ability to research prospective coworkers. For instance, if you have an interview with a company, try searching myspace for some of the people that work there. It will help give you a feel for what type of office environment you are dealing with.
